Former staffing firm owner gets 13-month prison sentence, must pay nearly $1.7M A former staffing firm owner from Lowell, Massachusetts, was sentenced to 13 months in prison and ordered to pay nearly $1.7 million in restitution, the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts reported. Henry Lam, 68, was sentenced on Sept. 30 by Chief Judge Denise Casper in Boston after pleading guilty in May to failure to collect and pay over taxes and mail fraud, according to the announcement. Lam owned and operated HL Temporary Services in Lowell, which served client firms in New England. The department said Lam cashed clients’ checks at a check-cashing business and paid the temporary workers primarily in cash. Lam hid more the $6.2 million in payroll, avoiding more than $1.5 million in payroll taxes, the department said. He also used the company’s false payroll numbers to get lower workers’ compensation insurance rates. An attorney for Lam has been contacted for comment. Source: https://www.staffingindustry.com
